Not just this

So badly did Jude Fawley want to belong to a scholarly community. So badly did Sue Bridehead want to stay unchained by marital norms. And so badly did Arabella want to land the best catch. Until the last few pages - so drastic and awfully sad – we don’t question the heft of the bits they’d pulled together to imagine beyond their cultural birthright. But as each copes with the tragedy, we are caught unaware. We look back and ask if we knew them at all, if we’d deceived ourselves by our own bits - or been deceived.
