Brandon Sanderson’s Warbreaker arrived as a surprise from a young person with eclectic tastes and an enormous range. That it was chosen meant I was going to love it and finish it in a breath. Which I did. At the center of the story are two brave sisters who undergo fantastic struggles and hold their own among gods. The telltale sign of emotion lies in their hair, which instinctively changes color with agitation or turmoil. Strangely, it is not an antenna of truth but something they must learn to manage unsentimentally. The ending is why love stories we’ll read forever: the women find their injured heroes and go about their business.
